LEGEND OF ASYURAI mentioned to Cikgu Zaki this morning about not being able to taste the Bubur Asyura that was prepared as a KGKT activity for the teachers and staff. He in turn told me that there was actually a story behind this but he could not remember the exact story. My curiosity was aroused and I decided to look up the story in the World Wide Web.
In Arabic the 10th day of the month of Muharram is called Asyura. In several districts in Indonesia, this day is celebrated with the making of red-white bubur. White symbolises Hasan and red, Husein. According to history, Saidina Hasan had tried to negotiate peace with the authorities for the sake of the Muslims.
Unfortunately, the peace talks were sabotaged by the the people in authority. When Saidina Husein realised the betrayal, he quickly rose to fight the authorities and because of that the Karbala Tragedy happened. The deserts of Karbala became a sea of red with the blood of syuhada.
According to the article that I read, this is day that Allah aided the prophets in overcoming adversity. It was also on the day of Asyura that Ibrahim escaped the fire of Namrud, Yunus managed to come out from the stomach of the whale, Musa was freed from the Pharoah's persecution and the Prophet Muhammad was saved from the Jews' poison. It was on this day that the holy prophet Muhammad went on a fast as thanksgiving to Allah for the victory of the prophets over evil. As a matter, if I am not mistaken the people should fast on this day instead of feasting.
I did ask Ustaz Fauzi and Ustaz Syed about the story of the origins of Bubur Asyura and they tell me that it could be considered more of a story than history. According to what they know the day is observed as the 10th day of the Muharram month and if possible people should go on a fast. Ustaz Syed even went as far as to contact his own teacher to confirm the story.
