SAVING OUR PONDOK ILMU This is Day 2 of our attempt to save our Pondok Ilmu from being eaten up by 'Bubuk', the insects that are doing all the damage. Four boys took turns to spray the pesticide on the wooden structure. Hanif, Hakimi, Saiful and Sharveen all were made to wear rubber gloves and sunglasses to protect their eyes and hands from the chemical. After that they were made to wash their hands thoroughly. Anyway, the pesticide used is not that strong as we had diluted it with 1000 ml of water. But it was a safety measure in case of contingency.
Actually, a few of the boys have had no prior experience with kampung-like huts like this as they were raised in big towns or cities. Hakimi who is from Shah Alam says that it was something new to him and it was a learning experience. The other boys also said that they learnt something new from this. It was not only them but also their teacher who learnt a thing or two about wood destroying insects and how to contain them. During the holidays, a few of them have volunteered to come help me apply shellac to the structure. But we have to wait and see if the 'Bubuk' problem is solved. If it does not work I was advised to use tar or diesel. Anyone out there who has any other suggestions?
