SYSTEM LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS (SLE)
I am going to do a post about Malaysian celebrity twins, VJs Teh May Wan and Choy Wan and their crusade for a cause that has affected many lives, lupus.
Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect virtually any system in the body. Think of it as a 'self-allergy' where the body attacks its own cells and tissues, causing inflammation, pain, and possible organ damage. It is a disorder where the immune system turns against parts of the body it is supposed to protect, affecting many parts of the body such as the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels and brain.
The disease is not easily detectable and can lead to kidney failure and death; but with proper treatment, most sufferers are able to lead a normal life.
The twins', who are of Norwegian-Chinese parentage, mother was diagnosed with lupus about ten years ago and so they are familiar with it.
Their mission in raising awareness of the disease began last year with the May and Choy Calendar – a charitable project and also tribute to their mother. It is because of their effort that
awareness of lupus has since tripled.
The May and Choy Calendar 2007 retails at RM20 at selected Fitness First outlets in the Klang Valley and all proceeds will go to the Persatuan SLE Malaysia. Those interested in bulk purchases can log on to http://www.lupusmalaysia.org/ or call 03-79577672.

Here are some sites that provide more information about this disease.
