HERBS PROMOTION
The Floral Exhibition ended last Friday and we at the library are going back to one of our favourite topics, that is, herbs. As we have our own Herb Garden, it is our responsibility at the resource centre to promote the herbs grown in the garden. The teachers and students need to be taught about the medicinal values of these herbs and how to cook them. In this way we get to taste the fruits of our labour. It was during recess time that Puan Kamariah demonstrated to the teachers present how to make kerabu from herbs found in our garden. We used a lot of the bebuas leaves as our plant has grown very big and there were lots of young leaves. For your information, the bebuas is eaten as ulam especially by the Malays. Among the medicinal uses of this plant is that when eaten raw it helps to rid the body of 'wind' quickly. If we boil the shoots, the water can be drunk to overcome the problems of worms and also to help mothers who have problems lactating.
Another herb that we got to try was the lemuni which is good for ladies in confinement. It helps to rid the body of 'wind'. This plant can be found behind the library building. It was only planted towards the end of last year but now it has grown rather tall. When fully grown, the lemuni tree can be about 4 metres in height. The cook for the nasi lemuni was our own Puan Asiah or popularly known as Cik Siah by the librarians who prepared the dish at home for us to sample during recess time.
