GETTING READY FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CARNIVAL
The English Language Carnival is less than three weeks away. Pamphlets on some of the activities have been distributed to each class to inform students of the activities. One activity that is carried out beforehand is the Newsletter Writing Competition. The students of each class have to produce a class newsletter. Their subject teachers will give them about 20 minutes each week during the English Language period to make the necessary preparations. This activity is a part of process writing. Prizes will be given to the best three classes. The class adjudged the best will have the honour of coming out with the second issue of "Quantum Quarterly" which is due out in September.
I have already started the ball rolling for all the classes that I teach. I have made my students elect their committee members, delegate tasks for each member of the class and discuss the contents they wish to put into their newsletters. I even brought a few of the classes to the library to look for materials that might be useful.
This afternoon when I had a class with the students of 4EN3 at 3.30 p.m., I told the students what equilibruim of force was and gave them the opportunity to practise how to make eggs stand. I had also told them about the centre of gravity and the concept of gravitation. (For your information, the students of Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, USA hold the Guiness Word Record for balancing 1,290 eggs in six and a half hours on March 15, 2003. You can get more information by clicking here.) My class carried out the activity about twenty minutes to the end of the lesson. At first the boys and girls were sceptical about eggs being able to stand but when the eggs really stood after they practised for some time, they were delighted. The pictures above show some of the students taking on the challenge and the successful ones. The students were very excited and can't wait to take part in this competition which will begin a week before the start of the carnival. The participants are given a time limit of ten minutes to make as many eggs as possible stand. Their achievements will be recorded. The participant who can make the most number of eggs stand will win the prize.
You must be wondering what connections this competition has with English Language. Well! This is actually a part of a Physics lesson on centre of gravity and since the teaching of Science, Mathematics and Technology is now in English, some of the activities carried out have Science, Mathematics and Technology as the themes. The teachers organising the activities are also from the Mathematics, Science, Technical departments.
